That All-Important 2008 US General Election Decider

Since it appears I'm going to be subjected to news and analysis about an electoral process I don't fully understand, but most crucially one in which I have no say whatsoever, for the next ten months, I thought I should make my position clear.

My American cousins, if you elect someone as spectacularly daft as the one you elected last time, I shall never speak to any of you ever again. That is my last word on the subject.

I DID NOT VOTE FOR BUSH!

Not either of 'em, not either time. If Huckabee or Paul wins, may I be your neighbor?

PS the electoral process sucks

You wouldn't think it possible to find "someone as spectacularly daft" as the last time, but somehow our system finds them every time... sigh. Sorry you're stuck hearing about it for the rest of the year, though.

I didn't vote for Bush either! And to be honest, I thought I understood our electoral process up until 2000. Now I wish we were on something more like the British system of voting. Particularly that bit where you simply write a tick in one box or another, then stick it in the post.

I'm feeling much less despair about my potential choices since Tuesday night. That Huckabee character worries me, though. And Obama, for that matter. Both of them are far too good at running their mouths without actually saying anything.

I think the American electoral system is hilarious. One of the newsreaders last night started talking about "Superduper Tuesday" and i nearly fell of my chair laughing; can you imagine us having something like that in the UK?!

Me, neither. I didn't vote for him and wouldn't have if he were running against my cat. And when do any of them have time to run the country, when they're so busy running for a spot to run the country from?

I suspect that if the only candidates are muppets, then they'll elect a muppet no matter what. It's just a question of which variety.

376 more days until he's out of the White House... calendars counting down the days until Bush is gone were among this year's most popular Christmas gifts.

I guess with hindsight, rather than threatening you all with the cold shoulder, I should be offering you all accommodation in the event that, despite your best efforts, someone awful does get in. Unfortunately, I don't have the room!

But I don't see my blog as having a particular bent to the left or right, so considering Bush's unpopularity among those reading here, I should hope your fellow countrymen won't make the same mistake twice.

The candidate I would most support in any political campaign is one I haven't seen since my university days.

Vote RON!

Of course, RON stands for "Re-Open Nominations" and the best part was that anyone who had stood last time wasn't allowed to stand again...

I'll be moving in if Huckabee ends up in office!

I've been wearing a t-shirt to sleep in that reads "Don't Blame Me, I'm from Pennsylvania" with the outline of the state in Democratic blue.

More specifically, I'm from Philadelphia: turnout in our city gave Kerry Pennsylvania, one of the key swing states.

But why should you understand our system when most Americans don't? If they did, we'd have done away with the electoral college ages ago.

excentric: please, for the love of any gods you like, will you get your cat on the ballot? There's enough civil service machinery in place that I think we would do most excellently well with a feline in the Oval Office. Please. Please.

Oh, I can always use a good laugh, and you certainly gave me one, Marcelle Proust. Personally, I think my cat would do an excellent job. excentric

I'm all for having a cat as President.

My partner isn't in the US and we've been trying to figure out who will move at the point that we're ready to move in together. Depending on who wins, I may be insisting that I get to move as a protection for my health and safety.

Now if only there was a candidate I *liked*...

If I have anything to do with it the "daft" quotient will drop by at least 20%....

But we need it to drop by 80%! Darnit...

Well, my only comfort is that I never cast a ballot for the present occupant...

I am an optimist and look to your example of Margaret Thatcher as a beacon that if the UK can elect a woman, maybe we in the US are FINALLY ready.

(As an African American, I don't think we are ready to elect one...)

P.S. No one elected Bush-- he pulled a cheat.

P.P.S. Those who did vote for him will not claim him-- no one knew he was this dim. (Its embarassing!!)
