Around here, our Labour candidate seems like a solid bloke - he's a councillor already (not for my ward) and seems to be doing good work at a very local level already. However even so, we're not hearing much from Labour in these parts.

(Today, a full eight days after I cast my vote and put it in the post, I have finally received literature from Con, Lab, Lib & Kip.)The Goldfishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15213378454070776331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10557263.post-70323140112142139522017-05-31T13:51:25.526+01:002017-05-31T13:51:25.526+01:00There's another reason why people vote Tory in...There's another reason why people vote Tory in affluent rural areas: the Labour candidate is very likely to be a "practice candidate", a junior party activist who stood to get a bit of practice campaigning but does not expect to win or perhaps even want to. As with some of the young MPs elected in 1997, they are much less likely to be independent of mind than an experienced candidate (or sitting MP) in a winnable or safe seat. This is in large part the product of our voting system; in a proportional system you could vote for your chosen party and at least one candidate would be likely to win, and that would be someone of your mindset who would be easier to deal with if you needed them.Matthew Smithhttp://www.blogistan.co.uk/blog/noreply@blogger.com
